Thomas “Tom” J. Walters, 91, of Fort Dodge, IA, was born May 18, 1929, in Maple Hill, IA and passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020, at the Humboldt Care Center South. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 2, 2020, at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home, 923 1st Avenue South, with Msgr. Kevin McCoy of Holy Trinity Parish officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Corpus Christi Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Post 1856 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard. Face masks are recommended and social distancing will be followed by attendees. Memorials may be left in his name to Veterans Memorial Park, which he was very proud of.
Thomas received his education in Granada, MN. He joined the U.S. Army in 1948, and was honorably discharged in 1952. He served in the Korean War and was a Sergeant with three bronze service stars.
He married Sylvia Vigdal on May 31, 1952, in Fairmont, MN. They were married 68 years. They had six daughters: Diane DeBruin of Fort Dodge, Colleen Calder of Las Vegas, NV, Kris (Mike) Rial of Fort Dodge, Donna Sullivan of Fort Dodge, Roxanne (Steven) Shaw of Las Vegas, and Patty Walters of Rockwell City. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter; 1 sister-in-law: Velma Walters; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his very precious little girl: Muffin.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Cornelius and Elizabeth (Hines) Walters; 12 brothers and sisters; son-in-law: Ted Pearson; grandson: Michael Schmit; and great granddaughter: Nicole Rial.
Tom retired after 37 years with the USG. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and loved to fish. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
