Fort Dodge

Steven M. Fortney, 68, of Fort Dodge, died Friday, February 18, 2022, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, after a long fight with health issues.  He is now at peace in Heaven with God and all his family as well as Melanie's family.  Private family services will be held at a later date.   Memorials may be directed to the family.

Steven was born September 19, 1953, in Fort Dodge, the son of Mervin and Wanetta (Edmunson) Fortney.  He attended school at Fort Dodge Senior High.  On June 18, 1977, he was united in marriage to Melanie Pommer in Fort Dodge.  Steve enjoyed cooking, baking and fishing.  He loved and took great pride in gardening.  He won many blue ribbons at the fair with his flowers.  Steve was a member of the Fort Dodge Garden Club.

Steve is survived and deeply loved by his wife of 44 years:  Melanie Fortney of Fort Dodge; 2 children:  Mandy Waldschmidt and husband Paul II of Fort Dodge and Marshall Fortney and wife Holly of Otho, IA; 4 honorary children:  Logan Rasch of Tucson, AZ, Launa Misleh and husband Dave of Ponce Inlet, FL, Luke Rasch and wife Haliegh of Shawnee, OK, and Kara Crapser of Mithcelville, IA; special grandson:  Jayce Waldschmidt and fiancee Echo Bearden; grandchildren:  Gabriella Waldschmidt, Jolie Waldschmidt, Marie Fortney, Ethan Fortney, Liam Rasch, Addy, Henley, Ava Rasch, Isabel, & one on they way; and 2 siblings:  Vickie Hendrickson of St. Helens, OR and Terry Fortney and wife Bev or Fort Dodge.  He is also survived by his nephews & nieces:  Jimmy Hendrickson and wife Sy, Stacy, Richard Fortney and Kelli Schmadeke and husband Chad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 siblings:  Debbie Fortney, Linda Berte and Cherry Casey.
