Ruth E. Hoskin
Ruth Elizabeth Gawtry Hoskin, 94, lifelong resident of Fort Dodge, died at Trinity Regional Medical Center on January 1, 2007.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2007 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Fagerburg officiating. Interment will follow the service in the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Bruce-Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
Ruth was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on March 25, 1912. She attended the former Lincoln School as did her father and grandfather previously and where her children also attended. She graduated from Ft. Dodge Senior High and from The Fort Dodge Community College. Ruth then went on to complete her nurses degree at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Wheaton College in Illinois. Graduate work was done at Greeley State Teachers College and Drake University. Ruth was a member of the Chi Sigma Theta and a lifelong member of NEA.
In 1940 she met and married John Evert S. Hoskin, who was also teaching in the Pomeroy School System. Both John and she served in civilian capacities with the Signal Corps of the United States Army. Ruths secretary was Mrs. Annie Glenn, wife of former astronaut and United States Senetor John Glenn. After the war, they returned to Fort Dodge in 1946 to have a family. She began teaching fifth grade in the Ft. Dodge Public School System, first at Pleasant Valley and then Hillcrest schools until her retirement.
She enjoyed being a very active member of the First Baptist Church. Ruth enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and serving on many boards. Ruth also belonged to Story Tellers and Christian Womens Club.
Following retirement Ruth worked as a proud grandmother and assisted her son in property management.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, brother, Donald Gawtry, and dear friends Robert Osterberg and Norm Feest.
Surviving her are Rillmon Earl (Debra), Elizabeth (Paul), and four grandchildren; Eric, Sarah, Anna, and Luke Royer.
Memorials are to be left to the discretion of family.
