Richard W Carley

Funeral services for Richard Dick Carley 86 of Fort Dodge are Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge with Rev. Austin Hill officiating.  Visitation will be Friday 4pm to 7pm at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home. Interment, with full military rites, provided by the United State Air Force and the Fort Dodge V.F.W. Post 1856 will be held at St. Olaf's Cemetery in Fort Dodge.

Richard Wendell Carley, 86 of Fort Dodge, at 11:28AM on September 9, 2018 went to be with the Lord. Richard was the older of two children of Glenn E. Carley and Mildred M. (Shuck) Carley. He was born in Macedonia, Iowa. Where he grew up and helped on the family farm. He graduated high school at age 16. He joined the United States Air Force at 17, were he was a Staff Sergeant and served from 1951 to 1955. He is a Korean War Veteran. Richard went to college at Spartan in Tulsa, Oklahoma and received his Aviations Maintenance and Aviation Instructor degrees and licenses. He also went to Iowa State and received a degree in Agriculture (soil commission). He then followed his lifes dream in aviation starting at Ben Aircraft Service (Waterloo/Cedar Falls) 1958-1970 when bought out to Niederhauser Airways he continued on from 1970-1983. He then went on to Torp Aero Services in Bloomington, Indiana, Cape Aero in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Austin Aero/Ed Aircraft in Austin, Texas. He then moved on to working at AMR Combs as the Chief Inspector/Mechanic in Memphis, Tennessee, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas and retired in Birmingham, Alabama. While at AMR Combs he helped write the new FAA Regulations. He then relocated to Altha, Florida and worked with Wal-Mart before transferring to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where failing health issues had him resign. Richard was a lifetime member of the Commemorative Air Force. He was one of the first people to start Air Explore Post in Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. He also was a lifetime member Quiet Birdsmen.

He leaves behind his wife Jeanne Carley of 35 ½ years with four children Susan Erickson of Aurora, Colorado, Jan Atchinson (Mike) of Iowa, Thomas Carley (Candice) of Waterloo and Diane (David) Walvatne of Fort Dodge from two previous marriages and Jeannes four children Terri Chmielewski (Michael) of Altha, Florida, Thomas Anderson (Keely) of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Gary “Russ” Anderson (Kendra) of Ketchikan, Alaska, Susan Bristow (Robert) of Altha, Florida, 21 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Grandchild, two step-brothers Gary Keast (Carol) and Charles Keast, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard is preceded in death by his sister, Darlene Rose Carley, Mother, Mildred M. (Shuck) Carley, Father, Glenn E. Carley, Stepmother, Eldora “Maxine” Keast Carley, Grandparents, Arthur L. Carley, Lottie Carley, William Shuck, and Margaret Shuck, Father-in-law, Eugene Hulett, Mother-in-law, Genevieve Hulett, Granddaughter, Alice Chmielewski, Brother-in-law, Clyde Sheffield, Nephew, Tristan Parker, and Brother-in-law, Terry Parker.
