Maxine Thomas, 101 of Fort Dodge died June 4, 2018. Graveside services will be held August 8, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sixteen Cemetery, What Cheer, Iowa with her grandson Jack Thomas officiating. No other services will be held.
Maxine Thomas was born December 4. 1916 in Dedham, Iowa to Cecil and Margaret (Shaw) Bowie. She grew up in Carroll, Iowa where she attended public schools and then graduated from the University of Iowa. On January 3, 1940, she was united in marriage to Reynolds Thomas. While her husband served his country in the U.S. Navy, Maxine lived in Carroll, Iowa. After WWII, the couple moved to Fort Dodge where she has lived since. Maxine was active during her lifetime as she volunteered many hours to Family Services and the United Way and taught English as a second language for the Salvation Army and she also taught English at area prisons. She was the first chairman of the Webster County Family Service Agency (now Children and Families of Iowa), Maxine was a passionate and avid golfer. She was past president of the Iowa Woman's Golf Association. She was the Adult Basic Education Coordinator of Iowa Central Community College for many years. Following her retirement, Maxine was a volunteer adult reading teacher in several Fort Dodge locations. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Maxine is survived by her two children; Margaret Caturegli of Mexico and Seth Thomas of New Jersey, seven grandchildren; Margaret Ann, Leslie, Eduardo, Nora, Franco, Sarah and Jack and seven great grandchildren; Julia, Lucas, Marcelo, Elenice, Sam, Hannah and Molly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Reynolds Thomas Sr., son Reynolds Thomas Jr. and two sisters; Mary and Bernice.
