Leland Cole
Leland Gibbs Cole, 89, of Fort Dodge, died Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Heritage Apartments Chapel of Friendship Haven. Officiating will be the Rev. Evelyn Lewiston of the First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow at a later time at the Pilot Mound Cemetery.
Leland was born July 12, 1914 the son of Seymour Gibbs and Helen (Hawkins) Cole in Detroit, Mich. He later graduated from New Rochelle High School, New Rochelle, New York. Following high school Leland began his carpentry career with the Levy Construction Company in New York City.
Leland was united in marriage to Patricia Shane in Greenfield Mass. The couple later moved to Fort Dodge were in 1952 Leland started the construction of their home. Leland resided in that same home for more than 50 years. Leland operated his own carpentry business in which he considered no job too large or small. Following his first retirement Leland went back to work as a pizza delivery person for Pizza Hut. He remained an active driver up until 2 years ago. His ambition and safety while on the job were an inspiration to many of the younger drivers. Leland had even received a safety award from Pizza Hut. Leland was also very generous with his time and talents for those who needed the extra help.
Leland is survived by his two nieces, Karen Svensen of Oxford, Ala., Barbara (Frank) Hannah of Shelby, NC, two nephews, Gene (Betty) Svensen of Lavista, NE, and Bill Tynan of North Egremont, Mass., 8 great nieces and nephews, and one great great niece.
Mr. Cole was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia, 3 sisters, Helen Cole Tynan, Muriel Cole Carpenter, and Phoebe Cole McCarty.
Bruce~Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.
