Helen Grace (Brayton) Cookman

Clear Lake, Iowa

Helen Grace Cookman, 75, of Clear Lake, IA, and formerly of Fort Dodge, IA, died Saturday, November 27, 2021, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, IA. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 10, 2021, at the Historic Bruce Funeral Home, 923 1st Avenue South, with Rev. Jennifer Osheim-Owen of Friendship Haven officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held 2 hours prior to the service. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Services will be live streamed via our Historic Bruce Funeral Home Facebook page. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Helen was born July 29, 1946, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Kenneth and Georgiana (Sorenson) Brayton. She graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1964. On August 28, 1966, she was united in marriage to Michael Cookman and to this union 2 children were born: Todd and Tonya. The couple later divorced. Helen worked as a truck stop manager for many years until her retirement in 1998. Helen enjoyed socializing and spending time with family & friends. She also enjoyed cooking, embroidery, latch hook, bowling, 500, Dice and a nice cup of coffee with the ladies. She often looked forward to attending activities and events involving her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Otho.

Helen is survived by 2 children: Todd Cookman and wife Michaela of Clear Lake and Tonya Cummings and husband Roger of Austin, MN; 6 grandchildren: Colton Cookman of Clear Lake, Tanner Cookman of Clear Lake, Tristan Cookman of Clear Lake, Kyla Cummings and boyfriend Luke Reed of Austin, Blake Cummings of Austin, and Lee Cummings of Austin; 3 siblings: Roy Brayton of Clinton, UT, Karen Koenig of Cortland, IL, and Darlene Holst and husband Gail of Otho, IA; and special friend: Lynn Rosenquist of Fort Dodge. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother: Marvin Brayton.
