Hazel Kathryn Onnen Zenor was born on December 19, 1922, in Bradgate, Iowa. She was the oldest child of Martin Jansen Onnen and Marie Christine Hoefing Onnen. Hazel attended school in Gilmore City/Bradgate, where she participated in the band and played basketball. She graduated from high school in 1940. Following her graduation from high school, Hazel moved to Fort Dodge, where she worked at the American Optical Company. In 1948, while at a dance, Hazel met a handsome young policeman named Gene Zenor. They fell in love and were married on April 18, 1949. Hazel and Gene were the proud parents of three daughters, Mary Jean (Marc Terrass), Carol Elizabeth, (Russell Meyer) and Ann Kathryn, and the loving grandparents of two grandsons, Charlie and David Meyer. They were married for 53 years, and made their home on 11th Ave. No. in the Round Prairie neighborhood of Fort Dodge until Genes death in 2002.
Hazel Onnen Zenor was a loving and cherished wife, a devoted and caring mother, a proud grandmother, and a loyal friend to many. She was a gifted seamstress, a pie baker extraordinaire, a creative quilter, and a passionate sports fan (especially of the Iowa State Cyclones, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, and of course, the Fort Dodge Dodgers!). Hazel thoroughly enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially to Minnesota, and she loved animals, most of all her beloved Schnauzers, Archie and Pepper. Hazel and Genes home was a haven filled with love and laughter. The legacy she leaves to those who loved her best is one rich with memories of a life well lived and a family she adored. Hazel was also a faithful Christian and a servant of the Lord. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church for more than 50 years, and she served the congregation in countless ways until she became ill in 2003. Now, Hazels family is comforted in knowing that Hazel and Gene are together again, and that heaven has gained another devoted and dedicated soul.
Hazel Zenor is survived by her daughters, Mary Zenor Terrass (Marc) of Eden Prairie, MN; Carol Zenor Meyer (Russell) of Clarendon Hills, IL, and Ann Kathryn Zenor, of Minneapolis, MN; her grandsons Charlie Meyer of Urbana, IL and David Meyer of Clarendon Hills, IL; two brothers, Marvin Onnen (Marlene) of Crystal Lake, IL and Robert Onnen of Rockwell City; two nephews and one niece, a “sister of her heart,” Georgia Paris Sabin and the Sabin family, and a host of loving friends. She was deeply loved by all of us and will be forever missed!
