Donald S. Perkins, 93, of Fort Dodge, died SaturdayFebruary12, 2011 at The Gardens of Friendship Haven.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday February 17, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Celebration Center Friendship Haven.

         

Don was born July 1, 1917 the son of E. Virtus and Ada Mary (Salisbury) Perkins in Springhill, IA.  He moved with his family to Des Moines in 1927 and graduated from East High School in 1934.  In 1936 Don began working for Carr-Moehl Millwork in Des Moines.

 

On January 21, 1942 Don was inducted into the United States Army serving his country until his honorable discharge on October 4, 1945.  On September 29, 1946 Don was united in marriage to Shirley M. Jervis to this union three children were born.  The couple later moved to Fort Dodge as Don continued being the Regional sales rep for Carr- Moehl.  In 1963 Don started and operated Lumbermens Millwork Supply in Fort Dodge, IA, supplying millwork products to lumber yards in Northwest Iowa.  Don was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1948 serving on numerous committees including coordinating the Lord's Cupboard for seven years.  His passion for children showed as Don enjoyed mentoring and working with the MYF programs.  His mentoring also involved him with Fair Oaks Middle School, Cooper School and Holy Rosary Schools.  Don had been a member of the Fort Dodge Rotary Club since 1956.  He was active with Fort Dodge Chamber of Commerce from 1971-1976 serving as the President from 1974-1975.  Don truly enjoyed volunteering his time and talents to numerous clubs and organizations over the years.

         

Don is survived by his wife Shirley, children, D. Craig (Patricia) Perkins, Bruce J. (Kay) Perkins, Nancy Perkins, good friend, Lynn Perkins, five grandchildren, Brad, Aaron, Alissa, Megan, Wesley and five great-grandchildren, Whitney, Daniel, Zoe, Ava and Jayden.

         

Mr. Perkins was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Lowell.
