Charles L. Fortney

Charles L. Fortney, 83, of Fort Dodge, IA, died Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family. Arrangements are with Historic Bruce Funeral Home of Fort Dodge. 

Charles was born July 17, 1941, in Fort Dodge, the son of Charles H. and Janice (Newman) Fortney. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High. Chuck retired as Captain for the Fort Dodge Police Department and also worked for Don Decker at Decker Truck Line for many years. In 2001, he married Catherine J. (McDowell) at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. A devoted fan of NASCAR, in addition to his love for racing, Chuck had a knack for uncovering treasures at flea markets. He enjoyed the hunt for unique items. Camping was another favorite pastime for Chuck.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 24 years: Cathi Fortney of Fort Dodge; 2 children: Charlene Peterson and husband Jeff, Leanne Hurdel and husband Tom; 2 step-children: Bill Moretz & Brad Moretz and wife Keri; 8 grandchildren: Emily Peterson-Hagenstad and husband Erik, Danielle Peterson, Erin Henriquez and husband Tito, Alexandra McCormick and husband Ben, Willie Moretz, Mollie Moretz, Madison Wellik and husband Matt, and Braxton Moretz; and 4 great grandchildren: Ariana, Emilia, Harper and Zaelah. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Thelma Fortney; and brother: Don Fortney.
